Here are a few tips about beading and jewellery making, starting with one of the basics – bead stringing. Obviously you will not get very far if you do not know anything about the different threads available.
Just to list a few – Nylon Wire; Memory Wire; Metal Wire; Chord; Terylene; Elastic Thread and Tigertail to mention a few.
Nylon wire is single strand in various diameters – Strong and cheap but doesn’t knot very well, you need to superglue knots or they will eventually fail.
Elastic Thread is a stretchy nylon ideal for bracelets but don’t forget the glue.
Tigertail is several steel strands covered with a sheath in different colours – used for heavier beads.
Terylene thread is good for necklaces and doesn’t rot but will fray in time – different colours.
Chord is thicker, stronger and used to hang pendants and heavier items. 1mm – 5mm in thickness.
Memory wire is a springy steel alloy usually in a gold or siver colour which retains its shape.
That is a short description of just some of the threads used in bead stringing. Now you can get started on stringing your glass beads.
